singularity. noun: the state, fact, quality, or condition of being singular. similar: uniqueness, distinctiveness, difference, individuality.

How do you really know someone? Can you tell from the first glimpse, from the way they dress? Perhaps the way they avoid eye contact or hold it. Do they turn away from you, or face you straight on? Do you know them by the years spent in their proximity, or the countless conversations about aspirations at lunch break in school? You only know what they want you to know. How do you really know someone.

Put together with the pressures of getting older, the biggest challenge of youth is trying to find your true self beneath all that is expected, both internally and externally. Black & white photography has always had a special place in my he(art), as it shows a more raw and intimate look into the subject. For this project in particular, I chose primarily to use monochrome photos with pops of colour to represent stripping back layers that are put up to mask true selves. 

The spin top from Inception has always resonated deeply with me and is a prominent part of this project. It presents the question of ‘where does the dream end and reality begin?’ and for me personally, it represents the dreams of who I want to be and the expectations I’ve pushed on myself as I’ve grown up. I often find myself wrestling with piecing parts of myself together in the wake of these standards, and questioning who I really am. At the same time, it’s these expectations and dreams that have pushed me to achieve so much.
